If you have ever wondered why my hair is so big....it's full of beauty secrets. Yes, I did just try and throw in a Mean Girls movie quote. In all seriousness, this is the hair trick you need to try out, and has been around for years! As a kid, I would sleep with curlers in my hair to achieve a Shirley Temple style curl. I love that I am not using any hot tools on my hair, it takes less than 5 minutes to braid before I go to bed, my hair is out of my face all night, and when I wake up I have effortless curls. This is perfect for work, weekends, school, getting the kids ready, camping, and it works for all age groups and hair lengths. I have medium textured/long wavy hair (see below picture), and my sister tried this on herself (she has pin straight shoulder length hair), and her daughter's hair (they all have different hair lengths and types), and they all loved it! I even got my roommate hooked on it. All you need is a bathrobe tie or hair scarf, and two hair scrunchies! If you don't have either of those items, you can use a bandana, scarf, long sock...get creative!

  1. Start with brushing out your hair. If your hair has a hard time holding a curl with a hot tool, or you find that your hair is slipping while you are braiding your hair, dampen your brush, and run it through your hair to dampen the different sections. This will be easier to manage and will help your hair hold the curl.

  2. Divide your hair into two sections, and pull them forward as if you are going to style pig tail braids.

  3. Place your bathrobe tie or head scarf on your head, and tie one side with a hair scrunchie so it doesn't get it the way. If you have short hair, fold the bathrobe tie in half before you start braiding the sections.

  4. Start with taking a small section of your hair and loop it around the bathrobe tie away from your face (I use small pieces near my face to obtain more voluptuous curls). Grab another chunk of hair, add it to the first chunk you started with, and loop it around your bathrobe tie away from your face. Keep grabbing new sections and adding it to the main chunk of hair until you reach your ear, and all pieces near your face have been looped around the tie away from your face. It usually takes me 4-5 sections of hair to reach my ear. I do pull on each chunk to tighten it on the bathrobe tie so my hair stays in place all night (see picture below on how it should look at this point).

  5. Once you reach your ear, grab a new chunk of hair and wrap it towards your face, and alternate the two chunks looping it away from your face, and towards your face, and grabbing more hair as you work your way to the end.

  6. Once you have braided all of your hair around the bathrobe tie, leave about 1 inch of your ends out. This will give your hair a beach wave look.

  7. Fold the excess bathrobe tie up and over your ends, and secure your hair to the bathrobe tie with a scrunchie. I prefer a scrunchie over a hair tie because it won't leave a crease/awkward dent at the end of your hair.

  8. Repeat the same steps on the other side, and you are ready for bed! It is very comfortable to sleep in, keeps my hair out of my face, and limits my hair from shedding in the sheets.

  9. Once you wake up, remove the bathrobe tie and unbraid your hair. Add hair oil to your hands and start running your fingers through your hair to separate the curls with the hair oil. I love Olaplaex No. 7 Bonding Oil, but you can use any oil or hair serum that helps with hydration and adds shine. https://rstyle.me/+6rKec5Hh84MKLei9c4b-Kw

  10. After all my curls are tousled, I add wave spray to keep the curls in tact all day, and it adds a natural wavy look. Once I spray each section, I will scrunch the ends of my hair up to add more dimension to the curls. You can use any hair spray, wave spray, or texturizing spray. I love Ojai Wave Spray, and a little goes a long way. https://rstyle.me/+tf0PflaszqcK9tzDxVyjaA

While we are still working from home, now is the perfect time to try this out and cater it to your hair. Try to use smaller or larger sized hair chunks, and different items to wrap your hair around to obtain different sized curls (smaller chunks of hair will be tighter and smaller curls, bigger chunks of hair will be larger curls). Message me in the contact box to let me know how it turned out for you!
